Why Leeds Children Are Thriving With Music Lessons (And How to Get Started for Free)

There's a moment that music teachers live for. It's not the first perfect scale or the first recital. It's the look on a child's face when they realise — properly realise — that they made that sound. That their fingers, their breath, their timing produced something beautiful.
It happens in Beeston. It happens in Meanwood. It happens in Chapel Allerton and Roundhay. Every week, at Music Lab School, we get to witness it again and again.
Why Now Is a Great Time to Start
Leeds is a city that punches above its weight for culture, creativity and education — and music is no exception. More families are choosing to invest in music tuition not just for the joy of it, but because the evidence for music's impact on child development is overwhelming.
Research consistently shows that children who study music perform better in literacy and numeracy, develop stronger working memory, build resilience and emotional regulation, and gain confidence in social and performance settings.
These aren't marginal benefits. They're the kind of foundational skills that shape how a child navigates school, friendships and eventually, work.
What Makes Music Lab Different
We're not a one-size-fits-all music school. Our teachers are working musicians who love teaching — and they know how to connect with children at any level, from absolute beginners to those looking to take grades.
We offer in-studio lessons at our four Leeds locations: Beeston, Meanwood, Chapel Allerton and Roundhay. We also offer peripatetic lessons — we come to your school, community centre or workplace — and corporate wellbeing programmes for adults.
What Instruments Do We Teach?
Guitar, piano, drums, bass, ukulele, vocals, violin, saxophone — if there's a demand, we build a programme. Our teachers are specialists in their instruments, and we match children with teachers who suit their personality and learning style.
How the Free Trial Works
We offer a completely free first lesson — no strings attached, no payment details required. You book, you come, your child plays. If they love it (and most do), we'll talk about next steps. If it's not for them, no hard feelings.

A Note on Age
We teach children from age 4 upwards. Adults are welcome too — it's never too late. We've taught complete beginners in their 50s who went on to play at local open mic nights.
