What’s the difference between ML1 and ML2+?
ML1 — Foundation Level
ML1 is for complete beginners and students who are still building the fundamentals.
It focuses on the core skills needed to become an independent musician: keyboard geography, rhythm, notation, coordination, technique, listening, basic theory and learning how to practise effectively.
ML1 is normally completed over around six months, although every student progresses at their own pace.
ML1 membership: £51.40/month
ML2+ — Developing & Advancing Levels
ML2 and above are for students who have already established the basics and are ready for more substantial repertoire, technique, theory, musicianship and independent learning.
As students progress through ML2, ML3 and beyond, the curriculum becomes increasingly challenging and develops stronger musical independence rather than simply teaching individual songs.
These levels involve more material and longer-term progression, with each level typically designed around approximately 12 months of study.
ML2+ membership: £61.70/month
You do not need to know which level to choose before joining. We’ll assess the student’s current experience and place them at the appropriate Music Lab level. A complete beginner starts at ML1; an experienced student may enter at ML2 or above.
Choose the right Music Lab level
You don’t need to work this out before joining. We’ll place each student at the level that best matches their age, experience and current musical development.
MLKidz — Ages 4–6 | 30 minutes
Our youngest piano programme is specifically designed for children aged 4–6.
These are 30-minute small-group lessons built around how young children actually learn: movement, listening, games, exploration, rhythm, coordination and short achievable musical challenges.
The aim isn’t to rush four-year-olds through a miniature version of an adult piano course. It’s to build strong foundations while helping them associate music with curiosity, confidence and enjoyment.
Students develop early keyboard geography, pulse and rhythm, finger awareness, listening skills and the beginnings of musical literacy before progressing naturally towards ML1.
ML1 — Foundation Level | 30 minutes
ML1 is our starting point for complete beginners and students who are still developing the fundamental skills needed to learn independently.
Lessons are 30 minutes and cover the essentials: keyboard geography, rhythm, reading, coordination, technique, listening, basic theory and — importantly — how to practise effectively.
ML1 is designed as approximately a six-month programme, although progression is based on understanding and development rather than simply reaching a date on the calendar.
Standard membership: £51.40/month
ML2+ — Developing & Advancing Levels | 45 minutes
Once students have established the fundamentals, lessons increase to 45 minutes.
That extra time matters. ML2 and beyond involve more substantial repertoire, technique, sight-reading, theory, musicianship, creative work and increasingly independent learning.
Each level from ML2 onwards is structured around approximately 12 months of development, with the difficulty and independence expected from students increasing as they progress.
The goal isn’t simply to keep collecting levels. It’s for students to become increasingly capable musicians who understand what they’re doing, why they’re doing it and how to continue improving.
Standard membership: £61.70/month
Meet Birdie
Every Harrogate Piano Lab, including MLKidz, ML1 and ML2+, will initially be taught by Birdie, Music Lab’s Head of Teaching Standards.
That is deliberate.
We don’t want to launch a new location by simply finding somebody who happens to be available on the right day. Harrogate is being established with one of the senior educators responsible for maintaining teaching quality across Music Lab.
Birdie has more than 15 years of teaching experience and holds a Master’s degree in Music Pedagogy — the study of how music is actually taught and learned.
Alongside teaching her own students, her role as Head of Teaching Standards includes:

observing and supporting Music Lab teachers

delivering teacher training and professional development

helping implement and improve the Music Lab curriculum

reviewing teaching standards across the school

supporting teachers with individual students and learning challenges

conducting parent and student check-ins

helping ensure that our educational philosophy is visible in the classroom rather than simply written on a website
So when we say Music Lab Harrogate is bringing the same standards we’ve developed in Leeds, Birdie is one of the people responsible for making sure that actually happens.
