The answer might surprise you — most children show clear signs of musical readiness long before parents realise it.

Here are 5 things to look out for:

1. They tap, clap, or stomp to music

Rhythm awareness is one of the earliest musical instincts. If your child bobs their head or taps along to songs in the car, that’s not just cute — it’s a genuine sign of musical potential.

2. They hum or sing spontaneously

Children who make up songs or hum while they play are naturally processing pitch and melody. This is a brilliant foundation for any instrument.

3. They ask to “play” an instrument — even an imaginary one

Air guitar counts. So does a spoon on a saucepan. That impulse to make sound is what we build on.

4. They can follow simple instructions in sequence

Music lessons involve patterns: “first this, then that.” If your child can follow a simple routine, they’re cognitively ready.

5. They’re between 4 and 7 years old

Research consistently shows this window is golden for musical development. The brain is wired to absorb language, patterns, and motor skills — and music uses all three.
